The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has added Pacific Network Corp, along with its subsidiary ComNet (USA) LLC and China Unicom (Americas) Operations Limited, to the list of communications equipment and services considered a threat to the national security. .

The agency said companies are subject to the exploitation, influence and control of the Chinese government and could be forced to comply with requests for interception and diversion of communications, without being able to challenge these requests.

The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau further noted that ComNet and China Unicom equipment and services could present an opportunity for the Chinese government to conduct espionage operations and gather intelligence against United States.

Alternatively, they could also provide the Chinese government with a strategic capability to “target, collect, modify, block and redirect network traffic”.

China Unicom also earned a spot on the list for being a Chinese state-owned operator and for engaging in business relationships with Chinese entities that violate “US national security and economic interests.”

The development came nearly six months after the FCC added Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky along with China Telecom (Americas) Corp and China Mobile International USA at the end of March 2022.

Other entities that have been added to the list so far since March 2021 include Huawei Technologies Company, ZTE Corporation, Hytera Communications Corporation, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Company and Dahua Technology Company.

News of the latest additions to the List covered also follows calls from the Ministries of Defense and Justice to address weaknesses threatening internet routing security.

“Known Vulnerabilities in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), which governs the routing of Internet traffic, continue to expose United States personal and business data and communications to the risk of theft, espionage and sabotage by foreign adversaries,” the agencies said. said in a statement last week.
