US Steel President and CEO and Honorary Campaign Co-Chair David B. Burritt announced at the event that US Steel is committing an additional $500,000 for the renovation in addition to an existing commitment of $500,000. $, bringing US Steel’s total campaign contribution to $1 million. The goal for the Carnegie One fundraising campaign is $18 million to fund major renovations and additions, including a performance hall, retail space, gymnasium, print shop, ceramics studio, and spaces designed for children and teens.

In addition to Burritt, the ceremony featured speakers including Governor Tom Wolf, Pittsburgh Penguins President of Business Operations Kevin Acklin, Braddock Carnegie Library Association Executive Director Vicki Vargo and Executive Director of the Eden Hall Foundation, Sylvia Fields.

“The Braddock Carnegie Library is the first of thousands of libraries that US Steel founder Andrew Carnegie has funded in the United States,” Burritt said. “This library, like US Steel itself, is part of the fabric of this region, and it will take teamwork to breathe new life into the building. That’s why we doubled our contribution of $500,000 to reach a total of $1 million. It’s an investment in our community to make it more than a library – a shining example of what can happen when partners come together to uplift communities and create a space that’s best for everyone.

The State of Pennsylvania also invested $1 million in the project through the Redevelopment Assistance Program (RACP) and $750,000 through a Keystone Grant for Public Library Facilities through the Ministry of Education.

“I am proud to support the legacy of the Braddock Carnegie Library with a $1.75 million contribution to the next chapter of growth for this building and this community,” Governor Tom Wolf said. “Once renovated, this library will serve not only as a portal to knowledge and culture, but also as a safe place where residents can gather for fellowship and exercise, creativity and curiosity.”

In addition to co-chairing the Capital Campaign, US Steel and the Pittsburgh Penguins will launch the second season of their Reading Champions partnership later this month. Reading Champions is a program designed to encourage elementary school students to read 20 minutes a day (the length of a hockey period). Last year, more than 200 students participated in the Reading Champions program, created to improve literacy rates in Allegheny County.

“On behalf of the Pittsburgh Penguins and our ownership at Fenway Sports Group, we are honored and privileged to partner with US Steel and the Braddock Carnegie Library Association to help restore this historic library that is so important to the economic renaissance and cultural heritage of the Braddock community,” said Pittsburgh Penguins President of Business Operations Kevin Acklin. “We are proud to stand with the people of Braddock and look forward to seeing the Braddock Carnegie Library continue to serve its children. and its residents for decades to come,” Acklin said.

The Braddock Carnegie Library renovation plan will allow the BCLA to better fulfill its mission as a responsive and essential place of learning, development and community enrichment for its neighbors.

“The Braddock Carnegie Library has a proven track record of providing area residents with dynamic and engaging educational resources, while creating cultural spaces that patrons of all ages can enjoy. With early support from Eden Hall, the investment Commonwealth’s RACP and now US Steel’s million dollar commitment, we are poised to cement the future of the library for generations to come,” said Vicki Vargo, executive director of the Braddock Carnegie Library Association “This renovation will ensure that the great building that Andrew Carnegie donated to the community will evolve and be accessible and sustainable to serve the community for another 130 years.”
