A topic of conversation. Over the years, some celebrities have left their mark on their industry — which teachers inspired to introduce a course about their impact.
Taylor Swiftthe discography of marked Brittany Spanoswho later created a vocalist course at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute.
“This course offers to deconstruct both the attraction and dislikes of Taylor Swift through careful readings of her music and public discourse as they relate to her own growth as an artist and celebrity,” read the description. of the course in February 2022.
The class discussed topics that included Swift’s music, entrepreneurship, sustainability and the mark her career left on the industry. At the time, Spanos noted that it was a “dream” to run a class on his favorite artist.
“I hope to help them rethink how to engage with one of the world’s biggest and sometimes divisive stars, in the same way that Clive’s teachers love Jason King, Vivien Goldman and Joe Levy done for me when I took their classes,” she said. Variety at the time, before adding that it was “such an honor” to share his expert point of view with the students.
His former teacher King also explained how bringing the course to life was a “no-brainer” for the department. “[Spanos is] a fan of Taylor, but she also understands how to culturally contextualize her and get students to think more deeply about her and her music through the lens of gender, feminism, race and class, and other related categories to identity, and that deeper reflection is what this program is all about,” he shared with Variety.
Later that year, Texas State University have announced that they will start a class in the spring of 2023 which was centered around Harry Styles.
“I’ve always wanted to teach a history lesson that is both fun, but also covers a time period that students have experienced and relate to,” Associate Professor of Digital History Dr. Louie Dean Valencia Told NBC in July 2022. “By studying the art, activism, consumerism and fandom around Harry Styles, I think we can address some very relevant contemporary issues. I think it’s so important for young people to see what’s important to them reflected in their curriculum.
