“The Boston Celtics announced today that the team has suspended Head Coach Ime Udoka for the 2022-23 season for violating team policies,” read an official Boston Celtics press release on Thursday. September 22, by USA todaynoting that “a decision regarding his future with the Celtics beyond this season will be made at a later date” and that “the suspension is effective immediately”.
Udoka, for his part, released his own statement following the news. “I want to apologize to our players, our fans, the entire Celtics organization and my family for letting them down,” he said. “I am sorry to have put the team in this difficult situation and I accept the team’s decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will not comment further.
The former Brooklyn Nets assistant coach – who been in a relationship with his bride Nia Long since 2010 – allegedly had an “intimate and consensual relationship with a female member” of the NBA, according to an Athletic report published on Thursday, September 22. The alleged matter is not only considered “inappropriate” by the franchise, but is a violation of its code of conduct.
News of Udoka’s suspension comes less than a day after ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski claimed that the Celtics coach could be suspended for the entire 2022-2023 season.
The former San Antonio Spurs player got engaged to Long, 51, in 2015 – four years after welcoming his 10-year-old son Kez in 2011. Udoka has also been a father-in-law figure for the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum Her 21-year-old son, Massai, whom she shares with her ex Massai Z. Dorsey.
Long, for his part, took to his Instagram story hours later to share a video with a cryptic message.
“When you see people changing their whole lives and starting to walk the path to enlightenment – I’m talking about cuddling trees, connecting with nature, loving yourself, embracing positivity, letting that light shine,” read the caption for the clip, which depicts a peaceful scene in nature.
In May, four months before news of Udoka’s alleged tryst broke, Long publicly congratulated his partner after leading his team to the playoffs.
“Speechless… patience and purpose,” she wrote via instagram at the time, adding “#imeudoka #blessedandgrateful”.
Earlier this month, the Best man the star shared a cute photo of her and Udoka’s son on their way to her first day of fifth grade.
“Here he is…my delicious little boy!” 🥰,” Long captioned the Instagram upload, which showed Kez smiling while holding a homemade sign on the new school year.
Although the athlete proposed to the New York native in 2015, Long revealed on “Yes, Girl!” Podcast in 2020 that she’s in no rush to walk down the aisle – and has been candid about her reasons for waiting.
“Love is complicated, let’s start there,” she said at the time. “And then you start a marriage, which I’ve never been married to. And there’s a reason for that, because I don’t know if I need to say “yes” to prove to you that I love you. … I don’t know if I need that to feel like I’m in a partnership that works.
