Earlier this year we covered upgrade to annual credits of up to $300 available on this card. Effective today (September 22, 2022), Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant cardholders no longer receive up to $300 in spending credits with Marriott Hotels. Instead, that credit is now available as a credit of up to $25 per month for restaurant purchases.

However, today we learned of a host of other changes to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant. You can read all the details in This articlebut here’s a preview:

  • Automatic Platinum status (formerly Gold).

  • A premium benefit for spending $60,000 on the card in a calendar year (starting in 2023).
  • An increased annual fee of $650 (see rates and fees).

Fortunately, the new annual fee will not go into effect for existing cardholders until your first renewal date on (or after) January 1, 2023. And many existing Bonvoy Brilliant cardholders are already see 10 additional Elite Night Credits in their accounts.

Enhanced Free Night Bonus on The Ritz-Carlton Card

This is more positive news for those who still hold the Ritz Carlton Card (no longer available to new applicants), as they too will see a more valuable free night reward in the future. Currently, cardholders receive an annual free night worth up to 50,000 points. On your next account anniversary, you will receive a free night worth up to 85,000 points.

However, the $450 annual fee on the card remains in place, so this is an entirely positive update to the card.

Quick thoughts on the changes

The benefits and benefits of the new Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card and Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card carry over some of what the Bonvoy Brilliant Card previously offered, such as 15 Elite Night Credits and free Gold status. These benefits are now available at a lower price ($200 less than what you previously paid in annual fees).

However, the cards do not automatically offer an annual free night; you need to spend $15,000 per year to earn this free night reward. This is in stark contrast to the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card, which automatically offers a 35,000 point certificate upon renewal.

It’s also worth comparing this to the corresponding cards from other chains. For example, the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card awards a free weekend night after spending $15,000 in a calendar year, but that’s worth practically any participating property. The card also has a lower annual fee ($95, see rates and fees), and the automatic Hilton Gold Status on the Surpass card is significantly more valuable than the Marriott Gold status offered on these two new products.

During this time, the World of Hyatt credit cardwhich also has a $95 annual fee, automatically offers a tier 1-4 free night award on account anniversary, and has the option to earn a second night free when you spend $15,000 on the card each year.

On the other hand, the switch to the Ritz-Carlton card is quite positive. Without increasing its annual fee, one of the main advantages of the card is to improve. Although the product is not open to new applicants, it is available to those switching from another Marriott co-branded credit card to this card.

The most complicated part of this news is the myriad of changes to the Marriott Bonvoy Brillant Card. The new perks might be attractive to some travelers, but others may be turned off by the higher annual fee and monthly dining credits — which take more energy to max out than the old $300 Marriott credit. Luckily, existing cardholders have some time to figure out if it’s worth paying the higher annual fee.

At the end of the line

Marriott came out with massive changes to its co-branded credit card lineup today — and that’s a lot to digest.

The main takeaways are that two new mid-tier Marriott credit cards are being launched, and the benefits are improving over the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex — but the latter is a $200 increase in the card’s annual fee. Additionally, Ritz-Carlton cardholders will enjoy a more valuable annual free night in the future, while the other three Marriott credit cards have launched high welcome offers.

You can count on TPG to keep you up to date with these changes by providing new reviews of these cards to see if their annual fees are worth it. We’ll also be updating our detailed reviews of each card in the coming weeks, so pay attention to these if you’re interested in applying for one of these cards or already have one (or more) in your wallet.
